Go Vita Ballarat Naturopath Inka Ferkova discusses hay fever, and the link to the immune system.
Allergic Rhinitis (commonly referred to as ‘Hay fever’) predominantly affects sufferers in the season of Spring.
Hay fever is triggered by pollens in the air that come from trees, weeds, and grasses. Whilst pollens are present in the air all year round, they are generally found in higher concentrations during Spring. Symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, loss of smell, post-nasal drip, cough, skin rashes or hives. Hay fever can also cause earaches, conjunctiva in the eyes, headaches and fatigue.
Many people do not start to think about treating hay fever until symptoms present. I recommend people consider preventative treatments early. Treating hay fever in late winter and early spring may reduce the severity of symptoms.
Hay fever is caused when the immune system identifies an airborne pollen as being harmful. The immune system responds by producing an antibody (known as immunoglobulin E (IgE)). Therefore, strengthening the immune system is beneficial in the management of Hay fever.
Vitamins and Nutrients that can help
Certain vitamins and nutrients strengthen the immune system. When patients present to me with hay fever symptoms we address deficiencies in zinc, vitamin C and bioflavonoids, quercetin and bromelain, vitamins, D, E and A and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC).
A diet that is rich in lean meats, fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds can provide all the essential nutrients for a healthy immune system, but at times people may need to include supplements into their regime to increase effectiveness.
I encourage people to try natural ways to help prevent or reduce their hay fever symptoms, before taking antihistamines. However, sometimes hay fever symptoms may not respond to immune-boosting nutrients, and antihistamines may be required.
